The Health Information Literacy Workshops

The outreach workshops had two main objectives:

–impart practical health information skills and knowledge to health workers and community leaders

–to update the health workers on current diagnosis and management of common diseases and/or topical health problems in their districts, as well as conducting health education and promotion for community leaders.

A pre-workshop visit was made before the main visit in each district. The pre-visit enabled the team to meet the district health authorities, the administration of the host health unit, deliver the invitation letters, plan for the main visit and sort out the various issues, such as venue requirements, including mobile Internet service providers. The workshops included a hands-on literature search session by participants, accessing the Internet using a mobile modem where other Internet sources were not available and Research4Life {https://www.research4life.org/)9 information resources registration where needed and/or where facilities were available. The process was facilitated by information professionals and health professionals facilitated a question and answer session on the identified topical issues in each district.

Nine districts participated in the workshops in the three years of the project, and 1,045 trainees including 510 health workers and 535 community leaders attended the workshops. A team of three health information professionals from Makerere University Library including an IT person, and health workers comprising two medical doctors and one senior nursing officer from Makerere University College of Health Sciences implemented the project (Musoke 2014). The following outlines the methodology and the findings.
